How to Join the Staff at the Race and Poverty Law Journal at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law
Students of the UC Hastings College of the Law may join the Race and Poverty Journal regardless of their class level.
Applications must be submitted directly to HR&PLJ, if not applying to the Journal through the Interjournal Writing Competition process.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis through September 23, 2005. It behooves applicants to apply as early as possible.
- Read the Mission Statement and Membership Requirements.
- If you agree with the Mission Statement, will comply with membership requirements, and have leadership qualities, or wish to develop them, we want you on staff!
In order to be considered for membership, please follow these steps precisely:
- Prepare a Personal Statement, not to exceed two pages, addressing the following:
- Why are you interested in HR&PLJ?
- What skills or experience do you have that demonstrate your commitment to the mission of HR&PLJ?
- How would you contribute to HR&PLJ?
- Articulate a vision of what you would like to see HR&PLJ accomplish (e.g. a panel on environmental racism, inner-city student mentorship program).
- Explain your understanding of the basic commitment you must make to the Journal in order to serve as a member. (Please review the membership requirements again if necessary.)
- Anything else about you that we should know to help us make a decision that is not reflected in your resume.
- Prepare a resume with particular attention to your social justice work, both paid and volunteer.
- Choose a writing sample.
- If the sample is more than five pages long, please submit a portion of the sample that will allow the Board to evaluate your writing skills.
- We prefer a legal writing sample. If you do not have a legal writing sample yet, simply submit other academic work.
- Submit via hardcopy to the HRPLJ (Race and Poverty) SIC Folder in a sealed envelope signed across the flap for security. If you are out of the area, mail the hard copy to:
Hastings Race and Poverty Journal 200 McAllister San Francisco, CA 94102.
- In addition, please email to the Journal with the word "Application" in the subject line.
If you have questions about membership or the application process, please email the Membership Editor at membership@raceandpoverty.org
The Hastings Race and Poverty Law Journal is committed to promoting and inspiring discourse in the legal community regarding issues of race, poverty, social justice and the law. This Journal is committed to addressing disparities in the legal system. We will create an avenue for compelling dialogue on the subject of the growing marginalization of racial minorities and the economically disadvantaged. It is our hope that the legal theories addressed in this Journal will prove useful in remedying the structural inequalities facing our communities.
Journal staff members must fulfill an hours requirement. Minimum 35 hours of work per semester on the Journal is required to stay on staff. We do not have an office hours requirement as of yet because we do not yet have a dedicated space in the school. Other requirements may be applied as we work to grow the Journal.
Please remember that the Hastings Race and Poverty Law Journal is not yet an official publication of UC Hastings College of the Law. The school has asked us to establish a "track record" of participation and publication before they will consider giving the Journal institutional support. Student leadership and participation is key to our quest.
